James: I got a fan letter, from a young lady. It was a suicide note. So I uh, I called her. I said, ‘Hey this is Jimmy Doohan. Scotty of Star Trek.’ I said, ‘I’m doing a con in Indianapolis. I want you to be there.’ I saw her and, I couldn’t believe what I saw. She was definitely suicidal. Somebody had to help her somehow. And obviously she wasn’t going to the right people. Anyhow I said, ‘I’m doing a convention two weeks from now in St. Louis.’ Two weeks from then and something and then she came to New York. And she was able to afford to go to these places. And this went on for two or three years. Maybe eighteen times. And all I did was talk to her, positive things. And then all of a sudden, ZIP. Nothing. I didn’t hear anything I didn’t know what was happening cause I never saved her address. Eight years later I get a letter saying, ‘I do want to thank you so much for what you did for me, because I just got my masters in electronic engineering.’ You know, to me, thats the best thing I have ever done in my life. And it brings tears to my eyes every time I even talk about the story.

On the set of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, there was a little boy supposed to shoot Sulu’s big scene with George Takei; however, the boy’s mother was hovering so badly that the boy was a silent, nervous wreck. When Leonard was made aware of the situation, he had two AD’s distract the mother, and, as Takei explained,
“Clad in the robe he wore throughout the movie, Leonard got on his knees in front of the boy, smiled, then pointed at George, asking ‘Do you know this man?’ The kid grinned a little, nodded, and…now, right before our eyes, Leonard miraculously transforms from a curmudgeon to cheerleader. He starts bopping up and down, smiling like crazy, tousling the kid’s hair, trading high fives, and by the time he’s called back to set, Leonard’s performance has left the kid laughing.”

The boy was a huge X-Men fan, and Cyclops was his favorite. The scene originally called for Cyclops to look at the train schedule, but according to Bryan Singer the boy could not stop smiling at James Marsden. Finally, during one shot, Marsden just looked back at him and smiled, much to the boy’s delight. Bryan Singer liked the idea so much, he kept it in the film, and told the actress playing the boy’s mother to react the way she did.
